My grandmother had lived in her country farm home for many, many years in Virginia, way back off the beaten trails of modern life. Grandad had passed away in the same house over thirty years earlier.
Grandma was determined to stay in the house they both loved, as they were very close as any married couple could ever have been. Many times she was asked to move in with her daughter, my mother, but she would only visit, and then would always make her way back to her home.
Both Christians,(Grandad was buried in their little country Church's cementary) Grandmother Tessie attended Church regularly, and it was believed that the main reason for her not wanting to leave her home, was to be nearby her husband, and eventually would be placed next to him, when her time would come.
She worked the garden her and Grandad had started in their younger days, and took care of maintaining the home, as well as cutting the three acres of grass. Time went on, and two years ago she became ill. She had had a bout with cancer 5 years before, and again she was diagnosed with the disease.
Her last two years, although she remained in good spirits, cheerful as she always seemed to be, the disease was taking its toll. Still she would not give up her home desiring that it would be the last place for her.
I was asked by my Mom to help take care of Grandma during her last days, and it was Grandmother's wish to pass away in her home, in the very same bedroom where her beloved husband had died.
Grandma Tessie was a courageous and strong woman, even to the last.> During our stay there, as the days wained on, we cared for her day and night.
One night as we all were asleep, my sister, my Aunt, and I were in the downstairs living room, near my Grandmother's bedroom. I awoke to strange sounds. As I listened carefully, I heard what I thought was voices in the upstairs hallway, that was directly above Granny's bedroom. It sounded like two voices, but I could not make out what they were talking about.I looked up to the hallway, but it was dark as was the rest of the house. The voice seemed so young and soft, and talking to another faceless voice.I looked over at my sister and Aunt, but they were asleep. The voices continued, but I was never afraid, as the voice was the softest, sweetest voice I had ever heard. I soon fell to sleep, unconcerned.
As we all awoke and were drinking our morning coffee, my sister turned to me and said.."Did you hear voices talking last night in the hallway above?" Yes, I replied..you too? Then she said that she also had looked up to the hallway and described the soft voices exactly as I had done! She said she even checked to see if I and my Aunt were asleep! Neither of us could understand anything the voices were saying.
My Grandmother just a few days before had said , laying on her death bed, "I saw the most beautiful woman coming down a mountain, with trails of beautiful flowers following her..it was beautiful." It seemed so strange the way the events were unfolding. Her Dream..then the beautiful voices in the hallway when everyone was asleep, and thinking back I remember several years ago, a lady in my Church had told me that "Sometimes Angels' Wings beat so fast, that they sound like..beautiful voices..filling the air!"
I feel like The Lord had given my sister and I a great gift for allowing us to hear those beautiful voices that night.....the soft sweet sounds of ..the Whispering of Angels' Wings.....who must have been coming for Granny, for two days later, on Mother's Day, she was taken Home. I also believe that The Lord's Gift to Granny, was to bring her Home on Mother's Day.
I shall never forget her, or those sweet sounds of the Angels in the hallway, and I know that Granny finally got her wish to be reunited with Grandad..and The Lord.
